Waterbending is the most versatile and unique art, as the first benders learned from the moon. Waterbending concentrates on the flow of energy, focusing less on strength and more on turning the opponents’ own power against them. Waterbenders can fluidly alternate from defense to offense, from a wall of ice to a jet of water. It’s the element of change, its season is winter, and its sub-skills are healing and bloodbending. Earthbending demands a special connection with the ground. Unlike the other arts, its strength lies in both offense and defense. It’s the element of substance, its season is spring, and its sub-skill is metalbending. Firebending is the most aggressive art. Unlike other benders who depend on external sources, firebenders can create fire using their internal heat source but they have to maintain a constant source of energy. Skilled firebenders are able to fly using jets of flames. A notable feature of special firebenders is an ability to create a hotter blue fire; Azula was the only known firebender who demonstrated this extra-powerful flame. It’s the element of power, its season is summer, and its sub-skills are combustion and generating lightning as well as redirecting it. Airbending concentrates on speed and evasion, forgoing a strong offense for defense. Though lacking fatal moves, it is the most dynamic of all arts. Airbenders use their momentum as a weapon, evading attacks with astounding agility to tire their opponents out or building up massive inertia for explosive gusts to make their counterattacks finishers. Airbenders can fly using a glider and wind to provide thrust and lift. It’s the element of freedom and its season is autumn.
